Why am I doing this? I am still completely walking on the moon that this dream has come true. These dreams, these crazy dreams...all of 'em. I'm coming up on 40 in summer, it's not lost on me how lucky I am. I'm lucky in love and most every way I can think of. We own our house outright, and have finally polished this turd into a gem, with no payments. She still needs some work, but she is ours!
To say it's been tough to remodel a house while raising children, going to school full time, starting our own business in our dream field at 40, and pursuing all of our dreams is an understatement. It has not been without its serious trials and some heartbreaking events, if my life seems picture perfect from the outside, rest assured...no one's is! I am a very private person, and even putting these things out there is hard for me. In sharing that my family has had trials on the road to our adventures, and in chasing our dreams, I hope to inspire others. Life is hard sometimes for everyone, but we all need to pursue adventure on some level! It is important to work to live, not the other way around :) Life is a gift not to be wasted.
What does all this have to do with fishing? Anyone who knows me well knows I have been on a pursuit of dreams for the last four years. My husband and I are working up to our last semester before we can finally begin acupuncture school. It's been quite a ride: full time school, living through a remodel, mother to a beautiful little boy, small business owner, and then there is fishing.
In terms of love the outdoors really is my first. We all have had those moments when joy creeps up through our veins, takes over our senses, and the proverbial heebeegeebeez send tingles up the spine. It could be just me, but these moments tend to make me want to jump up and down like a little kiddo. If there is one thing I have learned in this life, it's to remember in those moments what brought such energetic joy to my heart, and hold on tight...and of course...try to duplicate :)
I'm quite sure I couldn't list all of the moments in my life that have set off that spine tingling joy, but a few come to mind instantly. Sometimes its a simple song on the radio while cruising with the windows down, noticing the light dancing in the leaves of a tree, or my sweet little munchkin calling me "Mama" for the first time.
Fishing and being on the water is one of those constant sources of joy for me. There is not a single night before a fishing trip that I haven't felt the same excitement as I did as a child on the night before Christmas. In this complicated world of wars over religion, I have felt closer to God in nature than I ever have...anywhere. I'm pretty sure that is due to those seemingly heaven sent spine tingling moments of joy that take me over. Nature has always been my church. Those moments when I look out on the water and my vision is lit up with diamonds of skipping sunlight as far as I can see, set my soul on fire.
I had to take a hiatus from fishing while I was pregnant, and have taken some time off with my son while working to get my family's dreams on the road. During this time, I have had the opportunity to continue to teach fishing and rigging skills to others, and I love it! Getting back on the on the water again with my family is another major reason I do this, and that is something I hope to share here as well. I hope I can help families out there feel more confident in taking your little ones on your outdoor adventures with you. Mother Nature is a most capable teacher as well who will leave them with an indelible mark of love and respect for life that she is best to impart.
In my future blogs and videos I hope to help you all learn about gear, and safety, as well as some fishing and rigging skills. I love to learn, and I am still learning every day, which another huge reason I do this. It puts me closer to all the people who I have the incredible opportunity to learn from everyday. I want to be able to give back what I have been given, and that is ultimately why I am here.
There is no such thing as a pro in the outdoors. We all have things to learn from others...as well as knowledge to pass along. In pursuit of this adventure I have met some really amazing people, some of who have become my closest friends. Through these awesome individuals I been lucky, and determined enough to find some phenomenal support. I look forward to sharing my adventures and knowledge here with you. I am always open to questions, and when I don't know the answer, let us learn together :)
